The School of Education of the Central University for Nationalities(CUNSE), the most influential teaching and research institution for ethnic minority groups in China, is a large new-style institution at CUN, which comprises of three subgroups, Ethnic Education Research Institute, Art Research Institute and Art Educational Center. As the most professional and authoritative research institution, CUNSE incorporates a large number of renowned scholars and experts, most of whom have teaching or studying experiences at abroad and have contributed a lot to their professional research and daily teaching.
At present, the school provides 2 Bachelor programs (Educational Management & Pedagogy), 3 Master programs (Pedagogy, Education for Minorities & Art for Minorities) and 2 Doctoral programs (Education for Minorities & Art for Minorities), most of which are the only one or NO.1 authorized programs in China.
Up to the summer of 2003, CUNSE has already recruited different levels of students for 7 years. It also has offered varies of curriculums to teaching staff of ethnic minority areas for years. Some of them have become the nation’s standout persons in the field of ethnic education or art.
Research Institute of Ethnic Education (RIEE)
Research Institute of Ethnic Education (RIEE) mainly engages in ethnic educational research and contributes to the academic circles. Up to now, it has already published many heavyweight books and hundreds of papers both in China and at abroad, such as China Ethnic Minority Education Conspectus, China Ethnic Minority History of Education, Bilingual Education Conspectus on Chinese Ethnic Minority, General Discussion of Ethnic Pedagogy, Chinese Ethnic Minority and Education in the 20th Century, Ethnic Group, Culture and Education, Cultural Transmission and Educational Choices, Cultural Contexts and Bilingual Education etc.
As the only ethnic educational research magazine,the nationwide periodical "Ethnic Education Research" has already been published institutionally for 15 years in order to exchange information and expand communication, RIEE incessantly took on national “7th-five-year”,“8th-five-year”and”9th-five-year” key projects on ethnic education.During the national “10th-five-year”period, leading by Prof. Hajingxiong ,former president of CUN and an honorable projects' leader , RIEE takes on another key project named “Western China Development and Research on Educational Reform in Ethnic Minority Areas”. International co-operations are also very active, undertaking many joint programs like “Comparative Research on Living Environment and Education between “Uigur and Japanese Children” with Japan and “Research on Lahu Minority Girls’ Education ” Funded by the Ford Foundation.
These publications and projects have played an active role in domestic discussions on important issues concerning ethnic education, in exchanging and communicating information and experience, in making ethnic educational cause in China better known abroad and in promoting external contacts.
Now RIEE comprise of several offices for detailed research, which are responsible for special subjects, like basic educational theory, ethnic education history, ethnic infant education, ethnic basic education, ethnic higher education, extensive ethnic education, ethnic occupational education, bilingual education, cross-cultural education, cross-cultural psychology, educational anthropology and comparative ethnic education.
Research Institute of Art (RIA)
The Literature and Art Institute for Nationalities was founded in 1980 with the approval of the State Ethnic affairs Commission of PRC on the basis of Division of the Central University for Nationalities.It is the first institute in China that specially conducts all-round research on ethnic minority literature and art. In 2000, it changed its name for Research Institute of Art at the Central University for Nationalities (RIACUN).
The main job of RIACUN is to conduct theoretical and applied research on minorities' literature and art. The major works include books (like China Rock Painting, Discovery History of Chinese Rock Painting, Musical Instruments of Chinese Ethnic Minorityies etc.), national key projects (like Chinese Minority Literature History, Mongolian Literature History, Tibetan Music Research etc.) and some other activities. Now Prof. Wang, dean of the school, is conducting a national “10th-five-year” key project, China Ethnic Art Education Conspectus ,together with some other sub-projects.
Several special research offices of RIACUN are available including Ethnic Music Research Office, Ethnic Dance Research Office, Modern Dance Research Office, Ethnic Art Research Office, Ethnic Costume Research Office, Ethnic Industrial Art Research Office, Art Anthropology Research Office, Art Pedagogy Research Office, Art Psychology Research Office, Ethnic Art History Research Office, Comparative Ethnic Art Research Office.
Center for Art Education (CAE)
CAE, in order to meet college students' art demands and develop their art potentials, opens public art education curriculum to all the students of CUN, such as Calligraphy, Pencil Sketch and Ethnic Art Appreciation etc. By using multimedia in teaching ,which makes the courses more informative and interesting, CAE becomes more and more popular among students and faculty. Meanwhile it also directs various rehearsals for the CUN Student Art Group.

Introduction
Firstly founded in 1991, RIEECUN was supported by three different institutions:the Higher Education Research Institute of CUN, Pedagogy Teaching and Research Office and the Journal of Ethnic Education. The first superintendent of the institution was Gengshusheng. In 1996, it began to provide Bachelor program on Educational Management, Master program on Ethnic Education and Doctorial program on Ethnic Education.Gradually,at became an institution integrating teaching, publishing and scientific research. After years’ development, in September 2000, the Department of Ethnic Education was set up on the sasis of the former institute.
As the only ethnic educational research magazine nationwide,the periodical "Ethnic Education Research" has already been published institutionally for 15 years purposing in exchanging information and expand the mutual knowledge, In the year 2000, it was took over by the CUN Publishing House.
Up to now, many insightful books and hundreds of papers on ethnic education have been pulished either in Chinese or other kinds of languages, such as China Education for Ethnic Minorities Conspectus, China Ethnic Minority History of Education, Bilingual Education Conspectus on Chinese Ethnic Minority, General Discussion of Ethnic Pedagogy, Chinese Ethnic Minority and Education in the 20th Century, Ethnic Group, Culture and Education, Cultural Transmission and Educational Choices, Cultural Contexts and Bilingual Education etc. Three symposiums were held nationally on ethnic Education Theory and Management.
In the national “7th-five-year”, “8th-five-year”, “9th-five-year”and “10th –five-year” plans, RIEECUN took on a large number of projects or programs different levels on ethnic educational study, including:
The “7th-five-year” scientific research projects of humanities and social sciences in China: Research on Ethnic Education, by Xieqihuang and Sunruoqiong( persons in charge), together with some other domestic groups.It set up16 subprojects and published several books, such as the Brief History of Education for Ethnic Minorities in China, Research on Tibetan Education, China Education for Ethnic Minorities Conspectus, Ethnic Education in the Frontier of China and so on.
The “8th-five-year” national program on educational science in China: China Ethnic Minority History of Education, by Gengshusheng,(person in charge),in 1995, published China Ethnic Minority History of Education (the contemporary era section).
The “8th-five-year” national social science foundation, program for young teachers. American Educational Anthropology,by Tengxing(person in charge).
The”9th-five-year” national key projects of educational science: Research on Higher Education Development of Ethnic Minorities in the early 20th Century, by Hajingxiong( person in charge).
The “10th-five-year”national educational science key program: Western China Development and Research on Educational Reform in Ethnic Minority Areas, by Hajingxiong( person in charge), together with some other national wide groups.It set up 56 subprojects.
The “10th-five-year”national educational science key program:China Ethnic Art Education Conspectus,by Wangjun(person in charge) ,together with some other nation wide groups.It set up 15subprojects.
The “10th-five-year” national educational science ministry key project: Experimental Study on English Curriculum in Ethnic Minority Areas, by Changyongcai(person in charge).
The “10th-five-year” national educational science ministry key project: Comparative Study on Legislating Ethnic Education among America, Russia and Canada,by Wuminghai(person in charge).
The “10th-five-year” refined curriculum program in Beijing: General Discussion on China Ethnic Art Education,by Wangjun(person in charge).
The “10th-five-year” special educational science projects for young teachers in Beijing: Survey and Experimental Research on Adult English Curriculum Construction,by Changyongcai( person in charge).
The "“10th-five-year” key projects of CUN are: 1.Research on Educational Policy for Ethnic Minorities, by Tengxing ; 2.General Discussion on Bilingual Education, by Dongyan ; 3.Comparative Study on Legislating Ethnic Education among America, Russia and Canada,by Wuminghai .
China Educational Encyclopedia (ethnic education section), by Wangjun(person in charge),to be published in 2004.
In addition to the above mentioned projects, international cooperative research is also another important way in communicating and enhancing mutual development. To name but a few here:
Prof. Hajingxiong, cooperated with World Linguistic Minority Center in the University of Houston, took on Asian Higher Education section;
Prof. Tengxing: Problem Research on Lahu Minority Girls’ Dropout of school in the remote areas of Yunnan Province funded by Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (U.S.A.);
Prof. Wangjun:Research on Ethnic Colleges in China cooperated with Asian Culture Research Institute in the University of East Pacific Ocean (Japan);
Prof. Wangjun and Prof. Tengxing. Comparative Research on Living Environment and Education between Uigur and Japanese Children, which is the key project of Ministry of cultural and Edu in Japan.
Now together with other scholars in minority areas, RIEECUN is operating another important projects named Research on the Transmission of China Ethnic Minority Oral and Immaterial Culture, which is supported by the national “ 211 Project” as an key program.

2. Major papers, video and visual works:
More than 30 painting and sculpturing works, poems and novels (72), scenario and TV scenario (3), video films on minority folks (2), should also be included.
3. Academic projects:
Researchers are very active in undertaking social projects and compiliy books, a lot of which are conducted for the first time or single time in China.Many of these works won awards given by different groups,to name but a few:Chinese Minority Literature History, Mongolian Literature History, Yi Minority Culture History, Chinese Encyclopedia, Chinese Traditional Festivals (collected edition), Mongolian Traditional Poems (selected annotation), Buddhism and Tibetan Literature, Flying Dragon and Dancing Phoenix, and so on.
4. Academic activities:
The large broadcasting music performance, Tibetan Instruments Cento “Dafa Meeting on the High Snow Mountains”, directed by researchers of AICUN, won the 27th Asia-Pacific “Broadcasting Culture Fund” award. Some press conferences were held, including China Minority Instruments Records, China Rock Painting. Organizing exhibitions is another way of academic activities, including Chinese Instruments exhibition and China Rock Painting Photographs exhibition , which won widely appraises in academic circles. In 1993, the center of China Rock Painting Research successfully held “Exhibition of China Rock Painting”, which was considered of very influencial.
